The gold filigree is beautiful with a lace pattern design that resembles a blue sea wave with two repeating arcs. This is a vintage poison ring, a ring that can be opened and closed like a locket pendant.
A poison ring is also known as a pillbox ring. It’s interesting that the names of these rings have contradictory meanings. Other names include a locket ring, a box ring, a socket ring, a funeral ring, and a vessel ring.
Historically, it originated in India and the Middle East, spread to the Western world, and became popular in Italy during the Renaissance. As the name of the poison ring suggests, it was also used to contain poison, but it was also used for perfume, hair (during the Victorian era, it was used as a mourning ring in memory of the deceased). They were used to hold religious items (as a type of morning jewelry), religious items, mementos, messages, mementos, and portraits and photographs of loved ones.
